Helping Students Build Confidence, Interview Skills, and Career Readiness

How to pitch yourself x employability workshop by Equate Scotland

At Equate Scotland, we are committed to supporting students—particularly women and underrepresented groups in STEM—to develop the confidence, skills, and connections needed to succeed in their careers.

Last week, we delivered our “How to Pitch Yourself x Employability Workshop”, a full-day employability training designed to help students strengthen their personal brand, improve their interview skills, and gain hands-on experience with real employers.

This interactive workshop combined career coaching, practical activities, and mock interviews, providing participants with a valuable opportunity to bridge the gap between academic learning and the workplace.

Developing a Strong Personal Brand and Elevator Pitch

Students explored:

  • How to clearly define who they are and what they stand for
  • Identifying their core strengths, values, and motivations
  • How to communicate their skills effectively through a concise elevator pitch
  • Techniques to improve confidence, clarity, and authenticity

Through guided exercises and peer feedback, participants practised crafting and delivering their pitch. Recording and reviewing their pitch allowed students to reflect on their delivery style, helping them build greater self-awareness and confidence.

A key learning point was that a strong pitch should answer three simple questions: Who am I? What do I offer? Where am I going?

Building Interview Skills Through Practice

We were delighted to welcome:

  • Dr Simon Titmuss, Reader in Condensed Matter Physics, University of Edinburgh
  • Simone Forbes, Senior HR Manager (Talent & Resourcing), Forestry and Land Scotland
  • Kay Gordon, former Software Test Manager
  • Dr Axelle Caudrillier, former R&D Lab Leader
  • Eliza Butter, Graduate Social Impact Coordinator, Balfour Beatty
  • Alice McPherson, Social Impact Advisor, Balfour Beatty

Students were interviewed against realistic job descriptions in areas such as data analysis, software engineering, research roles, and environmental consultancy.

This hands-on format allowed participants to:

  • Practise answering competency-based interview questions
  • Improve their communication and storytelling skills
  • Receive immediate, constructive feedback from employers
  • Better understand what recruiters are looking for in candidates

Key Interview Tips from Employers

Our employer partners shared valuable insights into what makes a strong candidate stand out in an interview:

✅ Start with your strengths

Lead with what went well and highlight your achievements before talking about challenges.

✅ Show genuine interest

Employers value candidates who demonstrate curiosity—ask thoughtful questions about the role and organisation.

✅ Structure your answers clearly

Summarising your key points at the end of an answer helps leave a strong, lasting impression.

✅ Use confidence—even if you feel unsure

Imposter syndrome is common, but remember: if you’ve reached the interview stage, the employer already sees your potential.

✅ Remember the human element

Interviewers are not trying to catch you out—they want you to succeed and are assessing how well you might fit within the team.

Student Takeaways: Confidence, Clarity, and Real-World Application

The workshop had a clear impact on students’ confidence and approach to interviews. Participants highlighted the importance of:

  • Drawing on real-life experiences, even if they are not directly related to the job
  • Translating experiences into transferable skills
  • Staying positive and authentic, even when faced with unexpected questions
  • Structuring answers using frameworks like CARL (Context, Action, Result, Learning)
  • Ending responses on a positive note to leave a lasting impression

“It made me think of who I really am.”

“I believe I now have a strategy for a pitch—who I am, my values, strengths and passion.”

“Very practical and I thoroughly enjoyed the mock interview and the feedback I received.”

Peer feedback and employer insights were repeatedly highlighted as some of the most valuable aspects of the day.

Why Employability Workshops Like This Matter

For many students, interviews can feel daunting—especially when navigating imposter syndrome, lack of experience, or uncertainty about how to communicate their skills.

This workshop addressed those challenges by providing:

  • A safe and supportive environment to practise
  • Direct interaction with experienced professionals
  • Opportunities to learn by doing rather than just theory

By combining training with practical application, participants left the session feeling more prepared, more confident, and more equipped to succeed in real recruitment processes.
