CEP 2026 – Day 2: Communication, Courage and Collaboration

Day 2 of the Career Enhancement Programme (CEP) 2026 built on the personal insights and reflections from our first workshop, focusing on the practical skills that help professionals communicate effectively, lead confidently and collaborate as part of a team.

The day combined reflection, discussion and hands-on learning, giving participants the opportunity to develop both self-awareness and leadership capability in a supportive environment.

Reflection and Accountability

The day began by revisiting actions participants had taken since Workshop One. Through reflective discussion, participants shared examples of changes they had implemented, insights they had gained, and how they were applying the programme’s learning in their workplaces.

Participants particularly valued the opportunity to revisit their progress and hold themselves accountable for personal development goals.

“What I really liked about this workshop is checking in on what we’ve done since last time — holding ourselves accountable and having another chance to reflect and implement.”

This reflective approach is a key part of the programme, helping participants transform experience into learning that can be applied in real professional contexts.

Courageous Conversations and Effective Communication

A core theme of the day was the importance of effective communication in leadership, particularly when it comes to addressing challenging issues in the workplace.

Participants explored why difficult conversations are often avoided and learned practical strategies to approach them constructively. The session introduced a simple three-step framework:

  1. Demonstrate understanding through active listening
  2. Clearly express what you think and feel
  3. Agree on practical next steps and outcomes

For many participants, having a clear structure helped build confidence.

“It is helpful to have the three steps to structure the conversation. I feel more empowered to do this now in a more productive way.”

The session also resonated particularly strongly with participants working in male-dominated industries, where confidence in speaking up can sometimes feel challenging.

“I have always struggled with self-doubt and being scared to speak my mind, even if I know what I am saying is correct. The course has taught me it’s okay to take up space and be heard, especially in a male-dominated field.”

Understanding Working Styles Through MBTI

The workshop also introduced the MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) as a tool for understanding different working and communication styles.

Participants reflected on their natural preferences, strengths and approaches to problem solving, and explored how personality differences influence collaboration within teams.

For some participants, the session helped articulate patterns they had already noticed in their work.

“I always knew I was more of a vision than a mission person, and this has provided me with tools to manage that better.”

Others found that revisiting the framework provided fresh insight.

“I’ve done MBTI before but had forgotten a lot about it and found it more useful this time than in the past. The questions were good and I felt my final type was better aligned to who I am.”

These insights helped participants better understand both their own working styles and those of colleagues.

Leadership in Action: The Cable Car Challenge

In the afternoon, the focus shifted from discussion to practice through an experiential team challenge.

Participants worked in teams to design and build a cable car prototype capable of carrying a 500g load across a 1.5 metre span. The exercise required teams to collaborate across two separate locations, manage limited resources, and respond to unexpected changes during the project.

The activity provided a lively and engaging way to explore leadership roles, team communication and project planning.

“The cable car exercise was really good. It was fun but demonstrated a lot about team planning and dynamics.”

Participants also reflected on the importance of planning and coordination when working as part of a team.

“It was clear afterwards that our team needed to focus on planning more. This is very attributable to my work life in general, as I am minded to skip this stage not realising how helpful it will be to me.”

Some participants also saw opportunities to apply the activity beyond the programme itself.

“I really enjoyed the game and would like to take this for further STEM outreach for my business.”

Learning Through Experience

Throughout the day, participants were encouraged to reflect on the roles they naturally adopt within teams — whether coordinating, designing, communicating or implementing ideas.

The combination of reflection, structured learning and hands-on teamwork helped reinforce the programme’s focus on developing practical leadership capability.

Looking Ahead

Day 2 highlighted that leadership is not just about technical expertise or authority. It is about self-awareness, effective communication and the ability to work collaboratively with others.

As participants move into the final stage of the programme, they will continue building on these insights to strengthen their confidence, leadership skills and professional impact.
