Interested in becoming an Equate Student Champion?
As the new academic year approaches, we are excited to support a new cohort of Equate Student Champions. Equate Student Champions are students at college or university in Scotland who are paid by their institution and supported by both an institution staff member (“Equate Staff Champion”) and Equate Scotland to organise opportunities for development for women and minoritised gendered STEM students at their institution.
Some events organised by our Equate Student Champions last academic year included pub quizzes, career panels, staff and student networking, and an art exhibition!

We asked last years Student Champions what advice they would give to future Equate Student Champions, and we’d like to share this with you!
Advice for participating in the Equate Student Network across Scotland:
- “Turn up to as many events as possible”
- “Go out of your comfort zone and try something new”
- “Talk to others in the network”
- “Try new things even if they’re scary”
- “Even though it seems tough – just try to talk in the groups – it really does get easier the more you do it and helps others do it too”
- “Resilience! Courage! Open communication!”
- “Be yourself”
- “Ask when you need help”
For organising opportunities for other students:
- “Just do an event even if it feels like it may fail”
- “Be kind to yourself when things go wrong <3”
- “Stick with it, it may be difficult, but it’s worth it”
- “Just go for it! 😊”
- “Don’t be disappointed if some events don’t go to plan”
- “Everyone is there to support you and everyone in on your side <3”
And for collaborating with other Student Champions at your university or college:
- “Shared drive to share ideas/notes, have templates of event plants, risk assessments etc [within your university/college]”
- “[Develop a] mechanism for assigning/opting into organising roles”
