Equate ConStructEd 2022 – Good, challenging, experience of a lifetime (ConStructEd participant)

The Equate ConStructEd programme has now finished its fifth edition and continues to go from strength to strength. This year we were delighted to welcome 28 women students from 12 Universities and Colleges across Scotland who successfully built three wind turbines at the Sibbald Training site over three days.

In Scotland, around 2% of the onsite construction workforce are women. Therefore, this programme, the only women-only course in Scotland, is a necessary initiative to support women Engineering and Built Environment students into the industry and onto the sites.

The students worked in groups applying the knowledge and skills they had developed in the classroom (for some still online) to the practicality of the construction site. Skills including assessing two-dimensional drawings, steel fixing, formwork fabrication, concrete pouring, and making risk assessments.

When asked what they learned, one participant remarked:

“Everything. I knew how wind turbines worked but I had no idea how it worked in practice before this.”

Another commented:

“[I learnt] a lot! The majority of this course had things that we touched on in college, but this definitely taught me more about everything.”

Beyond the practical experience of working onsite and realising the importance of health and safety, many participants also reported improving their problem solving, technical, networking, and communication skills. Fantastically, most also reported that they were more confident as a result of the programme.

The team of students were led by the staff and colleagues from Concrete Scotland led by Dale Lyon, who provides experiential learning events to groups of students. They were also supported by industry mentors from Jacobs, Balfour Beaty, Sunbelt Rentals, and previous participants of the programme. Mentors add incredible value to the experience by offering hands-on support, insights, and invaluable careers advice and we are grateful for their ongoing support. One participant commented:

“A very valuable experience gaining priceless knowledge and surrounded by helpful people and professionals!”

At the end of the three days, we were delighted to report 100% satisfaction with the programme and that 100% would recommend the programme to a friend.
